The Soko Fund provides scholarships to students in
higher education in Malawi, Central Africa.
Depending upon income, the Fund expects to support between 8
and 12 Soko Scholarships every academic year.
Each Soko Scholarship is set at a level that makes a substantial contribution
to the cost of
- tuition fees
- university hostel fees
- the purchase of books and other equipment.
Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, each award being
based on both ability and need. Depending upon the students' continued success, as confirmed by the institution in which they
are studying, a Soko Scholarship is renewable up to a maximum of four years.
The Trustees reserve the exclusive right to determine both the value
of each award under the scheme and the applicants to whom awards will be made.
Soko Scholarships are confined to those who are studying or have been
accepted for study at a University or other institution of higher education in Malawi.
Soko scholarships
are restricted to women students born in Malawi undertaking a course of higher education at
a college or university there.
To secure
the support of the Soko Fund students must:
- Have been accepted for a course in higher education in one of Malawi's university level institutions.
- Enrol in a course of study that is vocational (broadly understood) such as teaching, agriculture,
medicine, engineering or the church.
- Intend to remain in Malawi and to take a post
after graduation that will contribute directly to the economic, political and cultural development of Malawi.
Preference is given to students from relatively poor backgrounds, and students
at the University of Malawi
must apply through the Vice Chancellor’s Hardship Fund.
In addition to standard Soko Scholarships, the Soko Fund administers some
further special awards.
