This award has been created by
a group of Stuart’s close friends, following his untimely death from cancer in Orkney, in August 2006. Stuart’s
life exemplified the opportunities that grow from education in its broadest sense. He was extremely well read, combined an
extraordinary memory with powerful intellect, and derived great pleasure and fulfilment from his knowledge in many fields,
especially history, theology and music. He had some dark times, but also knew how to live well as an entirely unpretentious
connoisseur of food and wine.
Throughout his life, whether in
the priesthood, in Social work, and (especially) in his exchanges with acquaintances and close friends Stuart was challenging,
stimulating, entertaining, affectionate, and quite unforgettable.
We miss him very much.
We hope that this award will enable
someone in Malawi to benefit from higher education in the way that Stuart did.
